The Asian Medical Student’s Association or better known as AMSA was officially founded in Manilla, Philippines in 1985 and has been an active, dynamic and exciting student-led, not-for-profit, non-political organisation.
AMSA is a peak representative organisation for medical students from across Asia, the Asia-Pacific and beyond. Founded in Manila, Philippines, in 1985, AMSA presently has 15 member countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
Building on its mission statement 'Knowledge, Action and Friendship', the three areas that AMSA continuously strives to inculcate:
Knowledge: AMSA promotes scientific and medical activities to increase and expand students’ knowledge whilst training to become the medical professionals of the future.
Action: As medical students who are concerned for the community around them, they endeavour to do things for the benefit and improvement of the fellow citizens.
Friendship: As future doctors, the aim is to build and maintain a good relationship among the many colleagues of the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
The EAMSC is one of the two conferences organized by annually AMSA, the other being the Asian Medical Students’ Conference ( AMSC). It is hosted every January/February by one of the member countries/regions, and around 300 medical students gather to discuss medical and health problems, exchange knowledge, and learn about cultural diversities.
Today, with members and friends spanning the globe, AMSA has an active student-exchange program, regularly undertakes national and regional projects, provides humanitarian assistance at times of need, produces quarterly student publications and liaises with the World Health Organisation, the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia and many other international and regional medical student organisations.
